Uncover Hidden Destinations: Why Gozo Deserves More Than Just a Passing Glance
Malta is an archipelago with 5 islands, of which 3 are inhabited – Malta, Gozo and Comino.
Gozo is the smaller sibling to the better-known destination of Malta, with roughly 34000 inhabitants, and situated only 20 minutes by ferry from the Cirkewwa terminal in the North of Malta, or 45 minutes from the capital city of Valletta. The island is known best for its Neolithic Ggantija Temple ruins – a UNESCO world heritage site; rural hiking paths, particularly around Gozo’s majestic cliffs, and the Inland Sea in Dwejra; its sandy beaches, spectacular scuba diving, and a more rural, laid-back way of life.
Gozo Experiences
Gozo offers travellers a host of experiences, such as traditions of bygone years like the milking of goats and sheep, and watching as this milk is turned into traditional Gozitan cheese. Imagine this as a group activity, with cheese tasting and dinner after your milking adventures!
As well as a visit to the Ggantija Temple ruins, there is also the Ta’ Kola Windmill, which gives visitors an insight into how Gozitans from yesteryear used to grind their wheat to make bread and other baked goods. Learning about history and days gone by can be a unique interactive experience, when you work with Rigo Malta DMC!
Why not explore a traditional Gozitan village? The recently restored ancient town of Cittadella, located on top of one of Gozo’s famed three hills, is the perfect destination. Close to Gozo’s Capital, Victoria, Cittadella is a maze of quaint streets, weaving in and around the bastions surrounding the town and the Cathedral!
Culinary Delights of Gozo
Food connoisseurs will love Gozo! The island boasts some fantastic gastronomy options, with Michelin plate restaurants, as well as some of the best examples of traditional local cuisine. Many of these restaurants either grow or catch their own produce, or are related to someone that does!
Gozo is also the destination of choice for several festivals, which mainly take place during the summer months. It is also home to a couple of clubs, to keep night owls happy!
Natural beauty is certainly not in short supply. The Inland Sea in Dwejra is renowned by stargazers as one of the best sites for observing the night sky, as it is completely free from light pollution, and the Mixta Cave offers breathtaking views of Ramla Bay from up high.
Marsalforn
From May to October, Marsalforn is the place to be. With a host of bars and restaurants offering everything from first-class dining to local snacks; beach life and scuba diving and independent shops selling everything you need for fun in the sun, there is something for everyone.
If you prefer to be on the sea, rather than simply looking at it, a boat trip on a tiny, traditional Maltese fishing boat called a luzzu is the perfect mode of transport with which to explore the Gozitan coast from the water.

Gozo deserves so much more time than just a day trip from Malta. To make the most of your visit, or to plan some of the unique experiences on offer, be sure to check in with the team from Rigo Malta DMC BEFORE you book your trip.
